Michael Dnes is head of future roads technology in the Department for Transport, with responsibility for accommodating new and modernised vehicles on the nation’s road network. Previously, he played a key role in the reform of Highways Agency into Highways England, and led the creation of the Second Road Investment Strategy. He is also a published historian of London’s Ringway plans for urban motorways, and runner up in last year’s Richard Koch Breakthrough Prize. He currently chairs a study with the International Transport Forum into adapting roads to prepare for autonomous vehicles, due to publish later this year.
