Mike O’Dowd-JonesStrategic Commissioning Manager - Highways and Transport Somerset County Council
Mike is commissioner for highways and transport services; ensuring £27m of services and £93m capital projects are delivered effectively; and is the South West Region’s representative on CIHT Council and member of CIHTs Learned Society & Technical Strategy Board.
He joined Somerset County Council in 1991 and became responsible for strategic planning services in 2006. His current focus of work includes Peninsula Transport Sub-National Transport Body, development planning, transport decarbonisation, delivering a Bus Service Improvement Plan and Enhanced Partnership with bus operators, transforming delivery of active travel, commissioning major highways and transport contracts and leading on infrastructure matters in the transition to a unitary authority.
Mike undertook a lead role on transport matters for Hinkley Point C nuclear power station applications on behalf of the local authorities, and had an instrumental role in resurrecting proposals to improve the A303 as a second strategic route between London and the South West.

Case Study: Mobility in Rural Areas - Somerset ‘Think Travel’ Total Transport Portal
Think Travel is a web-based journey planning and booking facility for use by local authority transport teams and the public, to provide a single point for all public transport information which will include public buses, demand responsive transport services, community transport options and community car schemes as well as enabling users to offer or request journeys and set up transport sharing groups.
